The theme of this school week is Peace.
Sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)
Most people in our world don’t understand peace as a positive concept. All they know is the negative aspect of peace, which is merely the absence of trouble. The definition of peace in many languages of the world illustrates that. For example, the Quechua Indians in Ecuador and Boliviause a word for peace that literally translates, “to sit down in one’s heart.” For them peace is the opposite of running around in the midst of constant anxieties. The Chol Indians of Mexico define peace as “a quiet heart.” Those may be beautiful ways to put it, but they still seem to leave us with only the negative idea that peace is the absence of trouble.
Peace can only come about when we learn to treat each other as brothers and sisters and recognise our shared vocation as children of God.
“Peace results from that harmony built into human society by its Divine Founder, and actualized by men as they thirst after ever greater justice”. Gaudium et Spes– “The Joys and Hopes” paragraph 78.
Let us pray:
We confess that in our lives we do not
Always choose the way of peace.
We spread gossip which fans the flame of hatred.
We are ready to make any sacrifices when Caesar demands –
but few when God invites.
We worship the false god of security and nationalism
We hold out our hand in friendship –
But keep a weapon in the other behind our back
We have divided your body of people
Into those we trust and those we do not.
Huge problems challenge us in the world –
But our greed, fear and selfishness prevent
us from uniting to solve them
Lord, we pray for your help,
Your forgiveness and your
Reconciling power in our lives.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of death. Amen.
Our Lady Queen of Peace pray for us.
