Almost 160 children representing 10 Schools descended on the Moorclose Community Sports Hall to battle it out for the crown of St Joseph’s Workington champions.
The Key Stage 1 event (years 1 and 2) is now in its’ third year and the competition was as fierce as ever as the teams of 8 players went head to head throwing, catching and dodging their way to potential glory.
Many of the Schools had spent weeks practicing for the event and it showed as the skill levels were up from last year with new techniques such as blocking emerging and it was really difficult to see which teams would battle through the group stages to the semi finals.
36 matches later and we had our answers as St Gregorys, Beckstone, St Marys and Derwent Vale were hailed as the respective group winners and with the other teams congratulated and given team certificates it was down to the business end of the tournament and it didn’t disappoint with Derwent Vale and Beckstone coming through 2 very exciting semi finals to contest another epic match with Derwent Vale emerging as deserving winners of the day.
Organiser and Sports Development Officer for St Joseph’s David Wise could hardly contain his delight at the enthusiasm and skill levels on show: “This is the first competition on our annual calendar and it never disappoints, to have this amount of children taking part in Sporting activity under one roof is amazing and I’m already looking forward to our next events early next year”. “Once again our Sports Leaders have excelled themselves and it’s great to see so many Schools supporting this competition”.
