ASHFIELD RETAIN WORKINGTON TENNIS CROWN

A well attended year 3 and 4 Workington Schools’ Tennis tournament was won for the 3rd year in a row by Ashfield Junior School.

The 8 School competition, which was held at Lakes College and officiated by year 8 Sports leaders from St Joseph’s School, was a hotly contested affair with many matches being disputed until the final point and it was Derwent Vale, Beckstone, Ashfield and St Gregory’s who made it through to the semi finals.

In keeping with the competition both semi finals were close but it was Beckstone and Ashfield who came through, both winning 3 matches to 1 with Ashfield taking the final 4-0.

Ashfield now go on to the level 2 Allerdale finals on the 30th of April with the prize for the winners of that event being a place at the prestigious Cumbria School Games in July.

The leaders from St Joseph’s had taken part in the annual Tennis Leaders course on Sunday the 17th of March with Sports Development Officer David Wise and he was full of praise for their efforts; “Umpiring a Tennis match is one of the most difficult things to officiate and it takes a huge amount of concentration to do it for almost 3 hours”. “Our leaders did a great job and were excellent with the children and they will get better and better as they go on to officiate at the next two events”.
