WORKINGTON’ ST JOSEPH’S WALKING FOOTBALL CELEBRATE A SUCCESSFUL YEAR

After their first full year of competitive action Workington St Joseph’s Walking Football club are reflecting on a very successful first league campaign.

The club was formed in 2016 after some initial funded sessions at the School and have continued their growth attracting many players from all over West Cumbria.

Sports Development Officer at St Joseph’s School David Wise, who also organises sessions and matches commented; “The growth of Walking Football continues rapidly worldwide and Workington has followed the trend”. “We have around 35 people aged 18 to 77 registered with us and although Walking Football is officially for the over 50’s I feel that the vast age differences produce a real family feel to our sessions and this is very much in line with the ethos of our School”.

The School currently hosts 2 weekly sessions on Mondays and Fridays and are looking to expand with another on Wednesdays in the new year. The club have now got their own committee, are arranging social events, are sending players to regional trials and are even planning a Walking Football tour to Spain in April 2020.

Mr Wise added; “These are really exciting times for Workington St Joseph’s, we have retained the County Cup, won the FA People’s Cup for Cumbria, played the regional event in Manchester and had teams that came second and third in the inaugural County league and this has given us huge impetus going into 2020”. “The social side is equally important to us though, we have formed good relationships with other clubs in West Cumbria and are continuing to provide improved social opportunities for everyone involved”.
