About St Joseph’s Catholic High School, Business Enterprise College
Founded in 1929, St Joseph’s has been serving Workington and the surrounding area for nearly 90 years and has a long tradition of being a family school with strong links to our community and our parishes. We are inspired by St Joseph, Patron Saint of workers and a member to the Holy Family to create real community with our students at the centre. Our school is recognised for its atmosphere of welcome and calm purpose.
We are very proud of our continued successes at St Joseph’s. Our priority is to ensure that the school continues to aim to be Outstanding. Our school was judged by Ofsted to be a ‘Good’ school in April 2016 and we recently gained our best ever GCSE results, so our journey to excellence has already begun.
St Joseph’s is a school which is constantly seeking to improve whilst keeping the traditional Christian values. Our mission is to create an environment that brings out the best in our pupils, year after year.
Central to everything that happens at St Joseph’s are our students. Staff have sought to ensure that every student is valued and listened to. Relationships between staff, students and parents are strong. We are proud of our ‘family feel’. Students appreciate very much the time that staff dedicate to them. Our 690 students are divided into a traditional pastoral system with five or six tutor groups in each year. The pastoral system is run by a Pastoral Leader with five non-teaching Heads of Year. Tutor time is a key time of day. The school follows its own prayer programme, “The Way” which ensures that our tutor time prayer and assembly time prayer leads to a growing understanding of our Faith over five years at St Joseph’s. Tutor time is also used to monitor the five aspects of care in our school: attendance, punctuality, achievement points, behaviour points and progress.
Support staff are excellent and work very hard to help teachers and other colleagues in their daily work.
Our staff work very hard to maintain our Catholic Ethos and are dedicated to our students. Relationships are central to our Mission Statement. Students know we expect the very best in behaviour and attitudes and they respond well. The school has dedicated Staff Training Time throughout the year. A recent Inset Day was spent with colleagues from St Benedict’s in Whitehaven. Where possible, we are working on Staff Development with other schools. A leadership development programme for our ELT is in process with another neighbouring school. Appraisal is well established and all targets match the current school priorities. We have also joined other Catholic Schools in our area to deliver training as part of the Catholic Teaching Alliance.
We take every opportunity to develop our building and are proud of the resources and facilities available to young people at St Joseph’s. We invested over £2m in recent developments including a new sports hall and pastoral suite.
The school is situated two minutes’ walk from the town centre of Workington. Whilst the site is compact it is very conveniently situated and is used every evening and at weekends by the wider community for Adult Education, Sport and fitness, meetings, Youth Attendance Centre.
General information on the area
The school is situated very close to the Lake District National Park which has recently become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over 50% of the teaching staff are from outside Cumbria, choosing to live and work in the county because of the benefits Cumbria brings: fabulous scenery, easy commuting, house prices to suit all budgets, plenty to do and see and great schools. It is a an area with a lot to offer, especially for families and those who like the outdoors and getting away from city life. Cumbria also has a good reputation for food and drink, home to many well-known brands and good restaurants and hotels. There is a Theatre at Keswick which has an excellent year round programme and in addition to this Carlisle, Newcastle and Manchester are easily reached by car and train.
Because Cumbria is also renowned for its low crime rate, friendly communities, old fashioned manners and values, it is a fantastic place to teach, raise a family, grow an inspiring career and pursue a wide variety of passions. This is why a large proportion of our staff who have come to work in Cumbria have made it their home.
