With 52 goals in 16 matches St Joseph’s annual year 5 and 6 Primary School Football competition was a match for anything at the World Cup as teams from 6 Workington Schools battled out a great event that showcased the huge amount of local Footballing talent we have.

With 7 squads of 8 players playing under a blazing sun the group stages of 3 games each were keenly fought and it was the teams from St Gregory’s and Beckstone A who were the early front runners playing a sparkling blend of attacking Football. Seaton and Westfield weren’t far behind and it was those 4 teams who made the semi finals with Beckstone A and St Gregory’s showing better finishing skills to beat Seaton and last year’s champions Westfield respectively.

The first half of the final was a very tight affair and the teams changed ends scoreless but a well worked Beckstone goal opened the floodgates and they finished as 3-0 winners.

FINAL SCORE: Beckstone A 3 St Gregory’s 0

GOLDEN BOOT: Matthew from St Gregorys with 7 goals. Fletcher from Beckstone was second with 6

PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT: Beckstone A’s goalkeeper Lilya

SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD: The whole squad from St Mary’s School. They displayed a great sense of fair play, worked very hard as a team, and were very courteous throughout.

Huge thanks go to Sandra Spedding and her team for supplying refreshments and Andrea Atkinson for the certificates.

Our Referees were year 8 Sports Leaders from St Joseph’s;

Cain Pears
Dylan Turner

They performed very well, represented the School admirably and showed a great deal of maturity. No need for VAR at our event!
