Mr Joe Holliday

I began my education by attending Northside Primary School when I was 5-year-old in 1949 and moved up to Newlands Secondary Modern in 1955 and leaving school at age of 15 to begin work for Cumberland County Council Highways where I attended the College of Further Education on day release. Over the following six years I completed my City and Guilds examination and subsequently passed the intermediate and final exams of the Institute of Highways Superintendents.

I was employed by Cumberland/Cumbria County Council for 40 years as an area foreman and ended my time with them as a Resource Manager in 1999. At that point I became the clerk to two Parish Council’s, and still am with one of them, making my time in Local Council employment to an unbroken 58 years. At this time, I also took up employment as Clerk to the Governors of Harrington St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, until 2018

In 2001 I was elected to serve on Cumbria County Council and I joined the governing bodies of two schools, Derwent Vale Clifton and Harrington Junior School where I assisted with the merger of the three schools to form Beckstone Primary School, and later I spent several years with Victoria Infants School Governors. Since then I have served on St Joseph’s Governors for the past 15 years and I am still on the governors of Derwent Vale, Clifton. I have recently decided to stand down from the Board of Governors of Lake College having joined them when I was first elected to Cumbria County Council in June 2001. I have served on various scrutiny panels for both councils and on four different Planning Panels including the Lake District National Park when I was there as a County Council Representative.

In 2007 I was elected to serve on Allerdale Borough Council, and became the Mayor for 2011-12, and in 2015 I was elected to Workington Town Council.
