Monday 31st October: Halloween

The Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

“Arise and shine for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you” – Isaiah 60

What immediately comes to mind when you think of Halloween? Probably, like most people, it is the images of witches and ghosts and so on: images of darkness and death.
In fact Halloween (‘All Hallows Eve’), the evening of the 31st October, is the vigil (beginning) of the feast of All Saints – the feast in which we celebrate the glory of God in His saints. The victory of light over darkness in the lives of God’s holy ones in heaven. Jesus is the ‘Light of the World’. The saints lived by that light, and became a beacon of light in their own generation. We too are called by Jesus to live out this calling – to be the ‘Light of the world’ today.

Tonight, many Christian’s will hold a ‘Night of Light’ celebration by way of being a Light to the World, rather than celebrating darkness and death. Children will dress up as saints, have a party and treats and maybe a bonfire. They will put a candle and a picture of the risen Christ in their windows to show their allegiance to the light of Christ, rather than the darkness of death.

We thank you
for your many blessings,
in particular for
all the holy men and women
we celebrate on All Saints Day.
Help us to contemplate
their holiness
on this eve of that holiday.
And may your protection
be upon all those
involved in Halloween festivities
during this night.
We pray in Jesus name. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of death. Amen.

Our Lady Queen of Peace pray for us.

St Joseph pray for us

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
