Tuesday 27th June: How Do I Pray? Part 2

The Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God – Mother Tersesa

Reflection

Prayer is a two-way communication between God, our Creator, and us! We are made for relationships, and communication is essential for growth in any relationship, but especially our relationship with God.

Prayer must be sincere, heartfelt, and real! God is impressed by what is in your heart, not with your quantity or quality of words.

Abraham Lincoln was asked why he was not praying that God would be on the Americans side during the American Civil War. He responded, “We do not pray that God is on our side; we pray that we are on His side!”

Our prayer can be our seeking God to align our plans with His plans.

Spend some time in quiet now, and in the silence of your hearts, what would you say to God?

What would your heartfelt words be to Him?

Then spend a little more time listening to what He might say to you.

Prayer

We can end this time of quiet by praying together the words that Jesus taught us:

Our Father who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be thy name;
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Reflection

What if I have never been taught how to personally pray or to talk to God? What if I grew up in a church that never had conversational or personal prayer? What if I offend God? But if you know how to talk and listen then you know how to pray!

If you think that you do not know how to pray, you need to ask yourself, do I know how to talk and listen? If you know how to talk to another person, then you know how to pray! Prayer is basically our communication with the God of the Universe who wants the best for us and to hear from us!

The great wonder is not so much in how we pray, but that God is willing to listen to us! The fact is, our prayer time with God is basically our conversing with Him, through which we express our thanks for who He is, what He did for us, and discover our purpose in life. So, through our prayers, we can be taught and we can grow, by the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer is not just talking to God; it is also meant to further link us to Him and develop our relationship with Him so we can build our faith, character, and maturity. Remember, we have access to God; we have permission to come to Him! Wow! What a privilege we have!

For us to even start to change our fears or laziness or expectations on prayer, we need to realize it is God at work in us, and allow Him to work at His pace. Learning to pray is like learning a new language. It takes that time effort; if we do not use it, we lose it; and, with prayer, we just end up not doing it.

Prayer

We will continue with How to Pray tomorrow but for now just spend a few moments in silence and practise listening. What do you think God wants to say to you this morning, remembering that He loves you with unconditional love?

We can end this time with the words Jesus used to teach us to pray:

Our Father who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be thy name;
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Wednesday 21st June: Why Pray?

The Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Reflection

Why should we pray? Here is a short explanation from the 24/7 Prayer Movement which is an organisation that promotes prayer all over the world.

Prayer

In our waiting, in our praying
in our being
by our actions
and our words
by our choices
and decisions
may we make your love known.

In our tears,and our anger
by our sharing
and our sheltering
through our joy
and thanksgiving
may we make your love known.

Our Father who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be thy name;
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Our Lady Queen of Peace pray for us.

St Joseph pray for us

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Tuesday 20th June: What is Prayer?

The Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Scripture

“Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” – Luke 11:1

Reflection

This week we will look and think about prayer.

Prayer

Lord, help us to connect to you. Help us to set aside time for you. Just as Jesus taught his disciples how to pray, teach us how to pray so we can stay in your presence today.

Our Father who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be thy name;
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil. Amen.

Our Lady Queen of Peace pray for us.

St Joseph pray for us

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
