Pastoral Care
Alongside safeguarding, we place the pastoral care of our students at the forefront of everything we do at St Joseph’s High School. Seeing our young people every day gives us the basis to build strong and lasting relationships to help them develop into mature, resilient, and confident adults.
Our pastoral team walk and work alongside our students, guiding them through difficult times and celebrating their successes and achievements. Form tutors are the first point of contact for students (and parents), with additional support provided by a dedicated Head of Year, who know and love all their students. Working with the heads of year, we also have an attendance lead and a mental health lead, who are dedicated to ensuring our students are successful in their school career.
Pupils begin their time in Year 7 with a form tutor who is part of the dedicated Year 7 team that supports them in their transition from Primary to Secondary school. As part of our whole school approach to reading, our year 7 tutor team are teachers of English, who will support students in their reading journey.
In years 8-11,we aim to retain the same form tutor to support students pastorally as they move through the school.
Growing up at high school can present normal day-to-day challenges and sometimes additional in-school support can be required.
External Support
Sometimes a pupil may need some additional support from outside agencies such as CAMHS, Health, the Police or Children’s Social Care. At St Joseph’s we work closely with a wide range of outside agencies to support the pastoral care, health and wellbeing and safety of our pupils.
We also work with the Cumberland Safeguarding Children Partnership for those students who need more support than universal services.
