British Values:
What are ‘British Values’:
- Following a series of terror attacks in 2005 the government set about trying increase more cohesive communities and identified that the following values should be promoted in schools:
- Democracy
- The rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual respect
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
Who learns about British values at St Joseph’s and why do we learn about them:
All of our students at St Joseph’s learn about what British values are and their importance in preparing students for life in the wider world. They study these values in RSHE lessons, through a series of yearly assemblies as well as through linked content in the curriculum of their usual timetabled lessons in a range of subjects.
We explore the British Values further by:
- Having a student elected, student council who meet regularly.
- Having a consistently applied positive behaviour for learning policy.
- Conducting regular student voice.
- Running a Youth Parliament club and taking part in mock trials.
- Having a range of guest speakers and assemblies.
- Having a rewards programme which rewards students adherence to many aspects of these values.
